12,000 Officers Will Train In W.Va. Facility

West Virginia is a new and unexpected frontline in the battle against illegal immigration. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has opened a multimillion-dollar training academy on a tiny road in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Border agents and customs officers from across the country will train here on the most controversial of skills -- the use of deadly force against illegal immigrant criminals.

The 124-acre facility includes a series of shooting ranges and simulation areas to re-create physical confrontations at border checkpoints.

Training focuses on when and how best to use physical restraint or deadly force. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Ralph Basham said, "In this age of global terrorism, it is essential that those sworn to protect the borders of our nation are fully trained and prepared to do so."
