'Pump First' Rolls Out Monday In Altoona, Johnstown

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 – updated: 6:26 pm EDT September 3, 2008

With the price at the pump, gas drive-offs have been a problem across the Alleghenies. While a local convenience store chain has solved the problem, for drivers who pay with cash, it may take a little longer.

Sheetz customers are already using the Pump First card in West Virginia and in Maryland, but starting Monday it will go into effect for customers in Johnstown and Altoona.

"There's a quick 30 second form that you fill out with your name, address and driver's license information. And that drivers license information allows the authorities to track you down, should you drive off without paying," said Sheetz spokeperson Monica Jones.

The card works just like a credit or a debit card. You slide it through the card reader, which activates the pump. But the difference is, if you're paying with cash, after you pump your gas you have to go inside to pay. Sheetz officials said it will serve a dual purpose.

"It's serving the purpose of not having to pre-pay, not having to guess how much they're really going to put in the tank. And it's helping us stave off drive-offs," said Jones.

However, on Wednesday, some drivers told WJAC TV News, they thought the Pump First cards defeat the purpose of a convenience store.

"I don't know if its going to be helpful, a lot of people don't have time. Like me, I just want to run in and run out," said Lori Jeffreys of Duncansville.

Sheetz officials said drivers can still use a debit or a credit card to pay for their gas. They can also still pay with cash, but only if they prepay.
