Elk County Community Dedicates Police Memorial

Saturday, September 6, 2008 – updated: 11:32 pm EDT September 6, 2008

In January 1984, Johnsonburg Borough police officer Carl Whippo was shot and killed while on duty.

Johnsonburg residents gathered Saturday to dedicate a memorial to Whippo.

Residents have raised money for several years to pay for the memorial.

Police officers from across the area came to the ceremony along with several members of Whippo's family.

"People still tell me how much they respected my dad," said Whippo's son, Terry Whippo.

The memorial includes an honor roll for other officers killed in the line of duty, but so far, it remains blank.

Organizers raised money for the memorial through several charity motorcycle rides.
