Crews Save Pets From Cambria County House Fire

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 – updated: 2:11 pm EDT October 1, 2008

Emergency crews saved several house pets from a Cambria County fire Wednesday, even treating a dog that was in respiratory arrest.

The owner of the home, Leo Barkley, was transported to Conemaugh Hospital to be treated for soot in his nose and mouth. Barkley's pets -- including cats, turtles, a python snake and dogs -- all survived the fire.

At least five fire companies responded to the blaze on Ragers Hill Road in Adams Township around 10 a.m. Officials said the fire started in a living room and spread throughout the two-story home.

EMTs at the scene saved a dog that was struggling to breathe.

"We expect to treat people and we found a fireman bringing a dog out. The dog was in respiratory arrest," said EMT Brian Christner.

Crews said they had some trouble fighting the fire because it was a wooden home that was recently remodeled and had double ceilings. In order to contain the blaze, crews had to cut two holes in the roof.

Officials said the home is a complete loss.
