Natural Gas Rates Down Across The Alleghenies

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 – updated: 7:43 pm EDT October 1, 2008

People who stay warm in the winter with natural gas from Dominion Peoples and Natural Fuel will see a decrease on their next bill.

Dominion Peoples' customers will save about $20 a month from October until January 1. National Fuel just raised its prices in August, but customers will see a $19 drop this month. The company filed for an emergency decrease until they can adjust their rates in November.

So who makes sure natural gas companies keep their rates fair for you?

"The Public Utility Commission does not allow gas or electric companies to make a profit on the commodity itself," said James Cawley, PCU Chairman.

That means, if natural gas prices keep going down, so will your bill.

The drop in prices is thanks to a rather mild hurrican season that didn't hurt any of the natural gas supplies. The National Weather Service is calling for a normal range of temperatures this winter, meaning you shouldn't have to crank up the heat.
