Jefferson County Fire Company Facing Hardships

Monday, October 6, 2008 – updated: 9:55 am EDT October 6, 2008

It has been a tough few years for fire companies across the Alleghenies.

Enrollment at the McCalment Volunteer Fire Company, in Jefferson County, has been cut in half over the last ten years.

According to officials, it's harder to keep young people interested in firefighting.

"A lot of them are more interested in playing video games than signing up," said Don Byerly.

Byerly added that many people in the community don't have the time needed to be a volunteer firefighter.

He said bingo games aren't doing well as they used to because of the new state smoking ban.

The department is looking for creative ways to raise money such as a consignment auction.

"People can donate items or just bring them in and we'll sell them," said Byerly.

Byerly added that the community has always been supportive of the fire company.
