Mining Company Wants To Dig South Of Adams Township
For years, Adams Township was a coal mining town. Now some residents want to turn the page on this. Residents there have dealt with both noise and health problems and have had enough. They want to stop Hoffman Mining Company from digging near their homes.Recently, some residents got a letter from the township's zoning board. They say Hoffman now wants to mine in a new area south of the township. Some people in are not happy about this because they still haven't settled another issue with the company.Hoffman wanted to mine 300 feet away from residents homes. There is a state law the permits this but Adams Township law says they have to stay 100 feet away. The attorney for Hoffman said there is close to 250,000 tons of coal in the area. If they follow the township law, they will only get around 30,000 tons of coal. Right now, they're in Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court awaiting a decision. There will be a zoning board meeting next week. The board will discuss Hoffman's most recent permit request and also hear from residents.
