Pa. Lawmakers Say State Could Face Massive Deficit

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 – updated: 2:25 pm EDT October 7, 2008

Two senior state lawmakers said the deteriorating U.S economy could put Pennsylvania $2.5 billion in debt by 2010.

State Sens. Vincent Fumo and Gibson Armstrong said Monday if action isn't taken to address the problems, then Pennsylvania will face a massive deficit.

Both senators said they don't see a way out of the problem without raising taxes, but Republican state Sen. Jake Corman said he believes the focus should be on spending cuts.

"The taxpayers are not an endless pot of money and they're all having hard times at home as well," Corman said.

Lawmakers said they doubt they have time to address the budget during the fall session. Stay with WJAC-TV News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage.
