Local Car Dealers Concerned About Struggling Economy

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 – updated: 7:24 pm EDT October 7, 2008

While some of the biggest car dealerships are seeing fewer buyers walk through their doors lately, it could be good news for local mom and pop used car dealers.

According to Bob Burnsworth of Burnsworth Autos in Windber, more people are looking to save money by buying a used car. He said it's both a good and bad thing. Burnsworth said having more customers is always positive, but their inventory is way down because of the bad economy and the so-called trickle down effect.

"We've seen an increase in people," said Burnsworth. "The bad part is it's difficult to get used cars right now. Our inventory is half of what it should be."

Burnsworth said with fewer people buying new cars and not trading in their old ones, there are fewer used cars to buy.

Burnsworth said financing is also an issue right now. Banks won't finance a car with more than 100,000 miles on it. Burnsworth said because of that, people are getting slapped with high interest rates from finance companies.
