Former Police Chief Stanek Will Remain Off The Job

Monday, October 13, 2008 – updated: 1:06 am EDT October 14, 2008

About 40 people filled a tiny room in the borough's administration building as council voted 3-2 to suspend Stanek without pay pending an investigation into his insurance fraud charges.

Stanek is accused of forging doctor's slips and collecting more than $8,000 in sick leave. He and his wife Debra are also accused of faking a hit and run accident to collect insurance money.

This comes after his arrest and suspension for DUI back in April. Board members said there is no timetable set for when they'll vote again on Stanek's suspension. There was also a motion to permanently remove Stanek from the force, but there weren't enough votes.

"The reason I believe council held the suspension, instead of dismissal was done in the interest of the public," said Council President Michael Suchar.
