Murtha's 'Redneck' Comment Gets People Talking

Posted: 3:34 pm EDT October 21, 2008Updated: 3:48 pm EDT October 21, 2008

For the second time in a week, Rep. John Murtha has made comments about racism in Western Pennsylvania.

Murtha recently told a Pittsburgh television station that certain segments of the population in the area are holding on to racist feelings and said those people will find it hard to vote for Sen. Barack Obama because of his race.

The congressman further said that just five to 10 years ago, "the entire area was redneck."

Local residents had opinions on both sides. Some said they agree with Murtha and think people are afraid to hear the truth. Others said Murtha's comments have gone too far.

"I don't pay much attention to what he says or what anyone says about race," said Johnstown resident John Kuchinsky.
