Nearly 15 Percent Of Cambria County Residents Below Poverty Level

Cambria County commissioners held a Hunger Summit on Wednesday, allowing local food banks to discuss their needs as the economy continues to sink.

Officials said nearly 15 percent of Cambria County residents are living below poverty level, and as a result, many food banks are running low on supplies.

Commissioner P.J. Stevens said the county is having problems providing resources to pantries.

"Surplus goods were often given to the food pantry. Now, there are surplus stores who purchase (goods) at a low price and put them up for resale," Stevens said.

As the demand for food grows, commissioners also asked the public for help in donating food.

Officials also said another example of how the weakened economy is affecting local residents is the fact that one in 10 people in Cambria County currently receive food stamps.
