Food Banks Encourage Needy To Get Supplies

Local food pantry workers said many people don’t ask for help, even though they need a hand.

Workers at the Somerset County Food Bank were busy filling orders for local families Wednesday, but a manager said it’s not as many as it could be.

At Trinity Lutheran Church, manager Diane Krotzer said more people were generous with donations than ever before. Krotzer said people they’ve helped feed before came back to donate food themselves.

But while the food banks have the means to feed more people in need, she too said people simply aren’t asking for help.

She said some people might be too proud, but some just may not have a way to get to the food bank.

Some organizations, like Tableland Services, help by providing transportation to elderly residents in Somerset County for $1.50.

Krotzer said that, in addition to food, the pantry distributes toothpaste, deodorant and other necessities.
