Carman's Wholesale Tires on Bedford Street in Stonycreek Township was gutted by a fire early Sunday morning. Since 4 a.m. crews were busy using water and foam on what's left of the business."Knowing the contents inside, we struck a second and third alarm immediately. It's one of the larger tire wholesales in the area. There's probably 20-40 thousand tires inside, not to mention oil products. We knew this fire was going to be tough," said Oakland Volunteer Fire Chief Tom Callihan. The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department is just a block away from Carman's Wholesale, but when the first crew got on the scene, flames were already covering half of the building. Callihan said crews also had to deal with a water supply problem. Crews had to go down Bedford Street to Wertz Road to plug into a water line.Callihan said, "We have tankers here working off the tanker dumps, so water was a dinfrance. We had some lines freeze and one of the hydrants we hit was frozen."An excavator was called in to try and pull apart some of the rubble so crews could spray water on the hotspots.A state police fire marshal was on scene Sunday. No word on a cause.Bedford Street from Wertz Road to Bentwood Avenue are closed.
