Tips To Stay Safe Using Alternative Heating
The temperatures are dropping again, so some people are relying on alternative heat sources to keep warm this winter. However, they may be putting themselves in danger if they are not smart about it.One example of heating fire is the blaze at Treasure Lake in Clearfield County this week. Fire officials ruled the fire accidental. It was caused by a wood burner in the garage. No one was hurt and the family's home was not damaged, but they are the lucky ones.According to the American Red Cross, space heaters, including wood burners, account for 66 percent of all home fires. They are responsible for 74 percent of fire-related deaths. Also, heating fires are the second leading cause of home fires, right behind cooking.Firefighters recommend keeping space heaters at least 3 feet away from other objects in the room. Also, make sure your chimney and furnace are inspected every year. Plus, use the right fuel. For example, only kerosene goes in a kerosene heater. Lastly, turn off your alternative heating before you leave the house or go to bed.
