Park Service Responds to Resignations

Officials Resigned From Flight 93 Memorial Board

Two government officials resigned from the Flight 93 Advisory Board because of their disapproval of the National Park Service's decision to use eminent domain to get land from owners for the memorial. The park service said it is sad to see the members go but plan to move forward with the memorial construction.

Both Somerset County Commissioner Pamela Tokar-Ickes and Stonycreek Township Supervisor Gregory Walker resigned from the board. Walker said in his resignation letter that the trust with the agency and the land owners had eroded.

The park service said it is doing everything to repair and rebuild that relationship. Joanne Hanly, superintendent of National Parks of Western Pennsylvania, said she has personally called landowners and members of the community.
