Altoona City Officials Cancel Second Jazz Festival

It started as two and is now down to one.

Dueling jazz festivals were planned for downtown Altoona Friday, but city manager and codes and inspection director have condemned the building next to the venue for Downtown Jams.

The Southern Allegnhenies Museum of Art, SAMA, was sponsoring the event. SAMA Executive Director Gary Moyer said there's no way they can move forward with the program.

"It was our hope to expand the venue for Jazz Fest," Boyer said.

City Manager Joe Weakland informed Moyer of the news Thursday morning.

In an e-mail, Weakland told Moyer the codes and inspection director didn't believe the building was safe for the concert.

SAMA and it's board have been planning the event for the past four months.

Jazz Fest, an annual event for downtown Altoona for the past six years moved down one block to Heritage Plaza this year.

Michael Rickard, owner of Michael's Cafe, is on the Downtown Jams board. He said he thought it was a good opportunity to have the second festival at Curtis Mall, the original location for Jazz Fest.

Rickard said it was a coincidence that the events fell on the same night.

Weakland told Boyer that if SAMA could find a different location, he may consider approving it.
