County Leaders Continue To Hope For New Budget

Posted: 8:27 pm EDT July 2, 2009

County leaders continue to watch the state budget situation with hopes that sometime soon lawmakers will agree. Many are frustrated that state lawmakers took the rest of the week off from budget talks. Counties are looking for answers on their funding. For Somerset County, commissioners also want the money back they said the state owes them.

"Fortunately, we as a county are in a good strong fiscal position," said Somerset County Commissioner Jim Marker. "We could weather the storm but not indefinitely."

Marker is keeping close tabs on the budget crisis. While the recession hasn't hit the county has hard as others, Marker still has a lot of concerns about the future, especially if the state he said, keeps breaking promises on reimbursements. State dollars not only fund local programs, it also helps fund the county court system and the salary for the district attorney.

"The county went along with making the district attorney position full-time with the understanding that the state would reimburse 60 percent," said Marker. "The state has not lived up to its commitment."

That leaves Somerset County out at least $150,000. Without reimbursements being put in the current budget or likely the next one, Marker fears that the dollars will keep adding up.

"When the state agrees to do something they don't always live up to their agreements," said Marker. "That's a problem and it lands on the backs of the county property owners in the form of higher taxes."

Commissioners are working with legislatures to try and get the money back.

Markers said if months go by without a budget, he fears they could eventually have to furlough workers and cut programs.
