Recession Keeps Folks Closer To Home For The Fourth
In 2008 it was gas prices, and this year, people say they're staying close to home because of the recession. While gas prices are 9 percent below what they were last year, folks told WJACTV.com the economy is making them look at vacation options within driving distance.Andrew Meyers of Jefferson County said he and his family chose Lakemont Park because each person could get access to rides and waterslides for $5 each."I think the expression 'staycation' instead of vacation is really coming through this year," Lakemont Park General Manager Barry Kumbf said.AAA estimates 37 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more this year either by car, plane or other forms of transportation. Travel in the US is expected to be down nearly 2 percent from last year, and surveys show people will try to save money by driving instead of flying.
