Mobile Unit Screens Miners For Black Lung Disease

Posted: 1:03 pm EDT July 6, 2009

A new mobile unit will be screening people for black lung disease in Somerset County over the next few days.

The free screenings are taking place Monday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Orenda Park along Route 601 in Boswell.

The screenings are part of a federal program to help miners monitor their health.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health considers Somerset a "coal county" and is inviting all miners who have been in a mine in the past 90 days to stop by.

Miners will be asked medical questions, and be given X-rays and other tests. The screening takes about a half-hour and is confidential. Test results will not be provided to the company where the miner works nor to the miner's physician.

On Thursday, the mobile screening unit will head to the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown.
