Somerset County Camp Cadet Underway

It's a summer camp like none other. Dozens of local teenagers agree to say goodbye to their parents and comforts of life for one week, only to return home with a new found sense of respect.

The Camp Cadet program is primarily run by members of the Pennsylvania State Police. It's day 2, and many of the 34 cadets are likely ready to go home.

"They're scared. They're all tired. They're all sore," said senior cadet Rubin McCoy, "but we're not going to let them go home because we know once they get through it, they'll thank us."

Senior cadets should know. They completed the program last summer and are here to keep the 13 through 15 year old cadets from giving up.

Senior cadet Lauren Wilson said, "we're more of the motivators, while the troopers are pushing them and being hard on them. We're here to let them know if they make it through it, they will feel so much better about themselves."

Most of the cadets have an interest in law enforcement. At camp, they learn more about the state police from K9 work to forensics and weapon safety. The rest of their time is spent on building team work.

Trooper Jeff Brock said, "it's an amazing thing to see a group of individuals come here from all over the Somerset County and leave here as a group, you'd thought they'd been friends forever. It's a miracle to see this work."

This is Somerset County's biggest class of cadets yet. All 34 cadets must complete a 2 mile run and CPR course to graduate this Saturday. The camp is traditionally free, thanks to the generous support of private and public donations.
