SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. -- Monday was a big day for two new Somerset County residents -- they got to play in their new yard.Bette and Kallie, two African elephants just in from Philadelphia, were brought to the International Conservation Center in Somerset County a few days ago in the hopes that they will one day breed with the male, Jackson. The three elephants on Monday took their first steps into the yard at the conservation center. It wasn't long before they started to make their way to the fence and began knocking over and playing with the trees.Officials at the Pittsburgh Zoo, which is working with the Philadelphia Zoo on this endeavor, said the goal is to slowly get the elephants used to the new environment so they are comfortable.Young Amelia Quezi was also on hand Monday for the event. As a member of the junior advisory council for the Philadelphia Zoo, she said she has a lot to report on."I am going to tell the council that Kallie and Better are doing very well," said Quezi. "They really love this environment."Quezi also plans to put together a Power Point presentation for her class in the Fall.In the future, the conservation center hopes to expand to help other endangered species like cheetahs, black rhino's, zebras and more.
