Enrollment Up At Two-Year, Community Colleges

Some local schools are boasting record enrollment by offering an affordable education and the promise of a job.

Tuesday, at a college fair in Johnstown, schools like Penn Highlands explained how students can afford to go to college.

Enrollment at the community college is up 25 percent this year. But the trend isn't just local -- other two-year and community colleges across the state are reporting more students.

"They can still transfer to the four-year colleges and universities, but save a lot of money," said Jeff Maul, Penn Highlands director of admissions. "Parents and kids are finding that out, so we're becoming a very popular option now."

Enrollment at Cambria-Rowe Business College is also up by 30 percent from last year, and many of those students are already out of high school and in the work force.

Cambria-Rowe Director of Admissions Amanda Artim said people who lost their job or who are looking for a career change can benefit greatly.

Penn Highlands officials said they are working closely with the local business community to see what skills they're looking for among graduates so the college's programs help prepare students.
