PSU Altoona Campus Remembers Student Killed

It was a simple trip to the grocery store that turned deadly.

Police sad Nicole Chuavet, 19, of Canonsburg was killed Sunday after the car she was riding in was struck by another driver.

School officials said she was a sophomore pursuing an education major. She was also a cheerleader on campus.

"Nicole was a very special young lady. She was always laughing, having a good time. She made everyone else on the squad have a good time and laugh," Penn State Altoona Cheerleading Coach Carrie Shaner said. "She was always dedicated, no matter what I asked her to do. Base, flies, she was always willing to do whatever we needed her to do to make the squad successful."

The crash happened at 6:35 p.m. at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Juniata Gap Road, police said.

Logan Township Police Chief Ron Heller said the driver of a Honda Civic failed to yield at a green light when she made a left onto Juniata Gap Road.

Heller said the driver of the Jaguar, 30-year-old Jason Sanders, of Altoona, tried to swerve and avoid the crash but was too late.

Heller said Kaitlyn Levins, 17, of Glenmills was driving the Honda. She was treated at Altoona Regional Health System and released.

Nicole Lawrence, 18, of Columbia, MD was ejected from the Honda during the crash. She was upgraded to stable condition on Monday.

Holly Hamilton, 18, of Sinking Spring. and Alyssa Walsh, 18 of Downingtown, were also treated and released from the hospital.

School officials scheduled grief counseling sessions Monday evening.

Police spent nearly five hours trying to reconstruct the accident. They're still investigating to determine all the details surrounding the crash.
