Lee Food Service To Close; 90 Jobs Lost

Long-time employer Lee Food Service will close, leaving 90 employees without jobs.

The company has been a major distributor to restaurants, health institutions and schools in the area for more than 130 years.

President and CEO Robert Donaldson said the company is now working with Careerlink and other sources to make sure employees will be in good hands.

Lee Food Service was created after W.S. Lee and Sons filed for bankruptcy in 2006.

Donaldson said it's been a rocky past four years, but things did pick up last year.

"In 2008 we actually had sales that were 70 percent greater than the year before through August of 2008," Donaldson said. "Then in September, when the economy crashed, it really affected the restaurant industry, which is the customer base that we service."

Donaldson said he will have more details on the voluntary liquidation on Friday.
