Huntingdon Co. Fire Companies To Merge In 2010

In Huntingdon County, three will soon become one. The paper work is nearly complete for Huntingdon Regional Fire and Rescue.

The new department will be made of up stations from Huntingdon Borough, Oneida Township and Walker Township.

Officials said the companies will remain open, it's the management, budgeting, and behind the scenes work that will change.

"We know what it's like to get help," Gary Garner, the future Huntingdon Regional Fire & Rescue chief said. "The biggest thing is, we've found by doing events together in the past, we've found if we pull our manpower together, it's made it better to do bigger fundraising event."

The merger was prompted when funding declined, as well as manpower.

The stations are nine miles from each other.

The 100 volunteer firefighters will cover 44 square miles and serve approximately 10,000 people.

Future Deputy Chief Jim Grace said it costs a couple hundred dollars to operation a station.

Grace said he's hoping the merger wills start a trend for the county.

He said if companies want to join on in the future, they can by filling out the necessary paper work.
