Local Servicemen Cope With Fort Hood Shooting Rampage

Posted: 12:34 pm EST November 6, 2009Updated: 4:21 pm EST November 6, 2009

Since Thursday's shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, WJAC-TV has received several calls from families with relatives at the military post.

Area resident Staff Sgt. Mark Morris' mother called to say that he is safe. Morris is an Iraq War veteran and was just two buildings away from the shooting.

WJAC also spoke with the mother of Lt. Col. David Chase, who said she heard from her son before she even learned what happened. She said he left a short message on her answering machine telling her that he was OK and that he couldn't talk for long. His wife is also a nurse who has been attending to some of the wounded.

"I can't tell you my feelings. I'm just so sad for the families and the injured … you've just got to pray," said Barbara Chase, David's brother.

Friday, all U.S. military forces and Department of Defense employees worldwide will observe a moment of silence at 2:34 p.m., the time the shooting began.
