6-Year-Old Amish Girl Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

Police haved located the driver they said struck and killed a 6-year-old Amish girl as she walked in Clearfield County.

The hit-and-run happened on State Route 410 near Mine Road in Brady Township. The area is about a mile outside of Troutville, which is one of the largest Amish communities in the northern Alleghenies.

The girl was hit by a van just before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday while she waited for the school bus.

Police said a 42-year-old woman behind the wheel of that van told them she thought she hit a deer.

Officials said the child was taken back to her house after she was struck, where she later died.

Residents said there have been several crashes on the road over the past few years involving vehicles and members of the Amish community. Residents said people often speed in the area.

"It's not surprising it happened, but it's surprising that someone keeps going after it happened. He may have been able to save that kid if he'd stopped and owned up to it. Maybe it wasn’t his fault, but why would he run?" said Burnelle "Bud" Muth, of Clearfield County.

Officials have not said whether charges will be filed against the woman.
