Federal Stimulus Dollars Going To Fake Districts
Five Pennsylvania congressional districts received a total of $12.6 million of federal stimulus money, creating some 32 jobs. The problem is none of it is real. That has many questioning just how effective the recovery program is.Pennsylvania is not alone. There have been similar errors on the recovery.gov website for states across the country. Hundreds of phantom districts supposedly received billions of dollars in funding.A spokesman for the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board blames the districts that did receive money for the false reporting claiming that they didn't fill out the forms correctly.Whatever the reason, the mistakes went unchecked and that has the media, state lawmakers and watch dog groups asking a lot of hard questions."I think it was bound to happen," said Rep. Bill Shuster, a Republican from the 9th District. "The government quite frankly doesn't do things efficiently or effectively.""We can't tolerate those kinds of mistakes," said Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Bob Casey.Rep. Shuster compared the flawed simulus reports to health care, claiming the government is too disorganized to run such large programs.
