A Closer Look At Fort Roberdeau

It's a place where history lives and breathes.

Fort Roberdeau is Blair County's tie to the American Revolution. Troops set up camp in Sinking Valley after they discovered lead they needed to make bullets.

In 1778, it took 70 men, five weeks to build the fort.

It was recognized as the frontier outpost of the American Revolution. It served two purposes: turning lead into ammunition for the Continental Army and providing a safe place for farmers threatened by British rangers and their Indian allies.

The fort was eventually destroyed, but in 1978, Blair County officials rebuilt the fort to commemorate the 200th birthday of the United States.

The park is county owned and it recently received $87,000 to upgrade trails and preserve the rural 230 they've acquired to protect the fort.
