Exploring The Espy House

It's the most famous home in Bedford County.

Twenty-five years ago, the Espy House was designated as a national historic landmark by the United States Department of Interior.

George Washington stayed at the home during the Whiskey Rebellion. A time when General Alexander Hamilton just issued a controversial financial plan, including an excise tax on whiskey.

At that time, farmers around Bedford County started boiling their grains to make whiskey.

As the first president of the U.S. and commander and chief, Washington led a federal army of 13,000 to Bedford to settle the dispute.

It was the first military test of the new government's ability to control its own internal affairs.
