Cambria County Residents Concerned About Icy Hill

While rolling hills are unavoidable in the Alleghenies, residents who use one Cambria County street are saying the combination of a steep hill and snow is a major problem.

People who drive Hystone Street in Ferndale said they simply can't stop when the road is snowy or icy and several times over the years vehicles have crashed into homes.

Kristie Gerber said she and other neighbors have been asking borough council for help.

"Somebody came down and hit our house -- I mean, knocked the whole porch in. And then about 10 days later somebody came down and ran right into it again," Gerber said.

Borough officials said they've posted new signs to warn drivers, but police said people need to use common sense.

Ferndale police Chief Art Boring said, "It's winter time. If you look down and it's snow-covered, it might not be a good idea to go down that hill because it's going to be icy and you might not be able to stop. Four-wheel drive does not help you to stop, anti-lock brakes will help you a little bit, but if it's icy, you're just going to keep on going."

Boring said there is also an alternative route.

"If you're at the top of Hystone, you can always go out Blossom onto Margaret and then go down Goucher Street," Boring said.

Still, Gerber said she hopes the borough will do more.

"It would be nice to have a barrier or something to stop people from coming over and smashing into our house," she said.
