JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- With melting snow and heavy rains on the way, The US Army Corps of Engineers is monitoring high-risk flood areas.

The Conemaugh Dam was built to prevent water from flooded towns and cities downstream. US Army Corps Resource Officer Dave Bishop said they've released water downstream already because they predict the Conemaugh Lake will fill up. Bishop said this will most likely cause flooding on roadways, but local officials will close roads as necessary.

The Conemaugh River starts in Johnstown, and Cambria County Emergency Management Director Ron Springer said they're checking the rising rate of the water. Springer said this gives them the ability to predict problems locally, and gives them a chance to warn the public.

Springer said the best thing residents can do it is be aware of their own surroundings, and don't drive over flooded roads.
