Building Code Questions Answered In Somerset County
Posted: 12:15 a.m. EDT April 6, 2004
The next time you remodel your home or business -- expect to shell out more cash. The reason -- Pennsylvania's uniform construction code. So -- what does it all mean?
The uniform construction code will affect anyone who wants to build new property -- or wants to remodel something they already own.
Beginning this Friday -- Pennsylvania's uniform construction code will be enforced. Which means -- you'll still need a permit before building or rebuilding -- but in addition -- pay for a housing inspector to make sure -- new additions -- are safe. So -- if you're going to build a 100-thousand dollar home-- you'll have to pay a one percent inspection fee -- so that's about 1,000 dollars.
To get their code questions answered -- local leaders and concerned residents came to the Berlin Brothersvalley Elementary School in Somerset County.
Debbie Willkow from Berlin says, "I own an old Victoria home. I do a lot of remodeling and we do our own remoldeling , so we're interested to find out on the codes."
Ralph Blanset says, "I've been in construction for over 55 years. We'll be completely involved with the new codes so we're interested to find out about the codes. We need to know what we're doing."
The cost for inspections will be based on the square feet of the property and whether or not it's residential or business.
