Flu Myths And Medicine

We've picked out some flu myths to tell you what's true and what's not.

Question: Can you catch the flu from a flu shot?

Answer: No. The flu vaccine is made from an inactivated virus.

Question: Can you catch a cold from going outside in cold weather?

Answer: That myth is also not true. Flu and colds are just more common in winter months because that's when the virus spreads.

Myth: Vitamin C can either keep you from catching the flu or will cure it quickly.

Answer: This has never been proven. But Vitamin C is good for your health.

Question: Are herbal remedies effective treatments?

Answer: There has never been any proof either way.

Question: Is the saying "starve a cold, feed a fever" true?

Answer: Actually neither are a good idea for you to do.

Chris Good is the Director of Pharmacy at Memorial Medical Center. He tells Channel 6 News, "There's nothing like chicken soup to make you feel more comfortable; a warm bath, that type of thing. The virus will run its course."

Some of you may get the flu this year. If you do, what's the best medicine? There is no cure for the cold or flu. You just have to do something about the symptoms. Just a reminder, symptoms for the flu are a sore throat, a fever, and a cough. Good news though, over the counter medications can help you feel better. For congestion take a decongestion like a sudafed. Tylenol can help you with the fever. And a cough suppressant can help when you get a cough. There are also prescriptions that some pharmacists say work.

Good, "If you're concerned about it and in a high risk group, you may want to give your physician's office a call and ask them about products like tamaflu and whether or not you should consider a prescription for them now so you can take them within the first 48 hours of symptoms."

But Good says if you're victim to the flu this year get comfortable, relax, get some sleep, and stay home, away from people, so you don't spread it.
