Website To Help Grieving

Military Families

Posted: 9:16 pm EST November 11, 2004

A Cambria County family lost their son in Iraq when his helicopter was shot down. Now, they want other military families to realize they don't have to grieve alone.

Dawn and Ron Golby's son Christopher was killed in Iraq in January. They say a memorial in his honor in Richland Townships Veterans Park helps their grieving process, but they've found another way to grieve they say can help other military families who've suffered a loss like theirs.

It's a website called Compassionate Friends. Dawn Golby went to the site to share her grief with others.

People didn't know how to respond to me. It was like oh. I'm sorry. They couldn't relate and I can't relate to how their child died.

Now Compassionate Friends set up a chat room only for military families, like the Golbys, who've lost a loved one in Iraq or Afghanistan. Dawn and her husband Ron say the site is a way to connect with other families across the country who have the same questions.

Was he suffering? How long was he there? Things like that and only another parent who's gone through that understands that feeling of hopelessness, helplessness.

Dawn and Ron say nothing can ever take Christophers place in their hearts, but if a website can help take some of the pain away, they're willing to try it. The Compassionate Friends chat room begins on Saturday, November 13th from 9 to 10pm.
