Police Chases: Training And Policy
Posted: 5:06 pm EST November 22,2004
Indiana -- There is training for police on chases, but not much. Every department has their own policy. Some departments have a no pursuit policy, others will pursue if the suspect has committed a felony. Policies are also made according to the time of day it is or if police are driving by a school. As far as training police get 40 hours of training for chases at the training academy, 16 of which they drive. However refresher courses are optional. Whether or not police should pursue a suspect is up to the officer and the departments policy.
Fred Kline is with the IUP Training Center. He tells Channel 6 News, "Just take all the factors in in the situation. Is it someone they know? Would it be better for them to just say I know where he lives instead of me taking a risk on a high-speed chase here? We'll just go to the house."
Now what if you're out driving and you think youre around a high-speed chase? Kline says just quickly find a safe spot to pull over and let them pass you.
