Progress Toward Conemaugh Tech Park

State Grants Money

Less than a week after word of Gamesa coming to Cambria County comes another announcement of economic development. A big step has been taken toward building Memorial Medical Center's Tech Park in Johnstown.

Johnstown's Redevelopment Authority received $4 million in state funding to redevelop the old Sani Dairy lot downtown. A press release from the governor's office says Governor Rendell granted the money for the Greater Johnstown Regional Technology Complex to be built there. The Redevelopment Authority says they hope the funding attracts the tech park, but Memorial Medical Center, who would build and own the center, says the Sani Dairy site has not been selected yet.

Ron Repak of Johnstown's Redevelopment Authority says the Sani Dairy lot was at the top of the governor's list of projects to fund. The site is considered a Brownfield site, meaning it is a run down, abandoned site and Johnstown is considered a distressed city. Both are situations the governor wants to tackle in his economic stimulus package.

The total cost to build the tech park on the Sani Dairy lot is estimated at $48 million and it is believed to have the potential to create close to 1800 jobs in Johnstown. Repak says the state money plus the Sani Dairy lot is the perfect fit for the Tech Park.

"It can support the purchase of those properties, the infrastructure to build it, utilities, storm systems, and what a perfect site. It's one of the largest in the city," Repak said.

Repak says he is well aware Memorial Medical Center is still considering other sites, but he feels the Redevelopment Authority has made a compelling argument. According to Rob Gleason, Chairman of the Board at Memorial Medical Center, their situation has changed since Conemaugh now has a definitive agreement to purchase Lee Hospital for $50 million. Gleason says they now want to integrate the Tech Park into the purchase of Lee Hospital. He also says Memorial should make a decision on where to build by spring.
