Deadly Fire

One Woman Killed

Officials say the fire began around 1:30 Monday afternoon along Scalp Avenue in Richland Township. The Cambria County Coroner says firefighters tried to get to the top floor of the building to fight the blaze in several apartments, but fire blocked the emergency exit and the ceiling began to collapse. The body of a middle-aged woman was found in the debris.

Denny Kwiatkowski, Cambria County Coroner said, "We didn't know until the fire was basically out until we were in the overhaul process when the husband came home and said he believed his wife might still be inside."

According to Kwiatkowski, the woman who was found in the building was Cynthia Fife, a Johnstown native. Crews said they found Fife's body in the bathroom of her apartment.

"It's not unusual for people to go to a place with water. Also, in the smoke, she could have gotten disoriented, and hit the wrong door," said Denny Kwiatkowski.

The building was also home to several businesses including a chiropractors office, a bridal shop, and a medical records office. There is no word yet on whether or not the medical records can be recovered, but one office employee said the records are not patient records, but insurance forms from doctors.

The bridal store owner said no brides lost any dresses in the fire. Representatives from all of the businesses said they have insurance.

A State Police Fire Marshall is to secure the scene and an autopsy is to be conducted on the woman Tuesday.
