School Taking "Necessary Precautions"

POSTED: 1:48 pm EDT April 11, 2006
UPDATED: 1:58 pm EDT April 11, 2006

School officials in Indiana County have not cancelled classes, but they are taking precautions after a student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

A seventh-grader in the Penns Manor School District is recovering at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital after being diagnosed last Friday. The student was sent home from school that day with flu-like symptoms.

Superintendent Dr. Thomas Scriccia said the district is working with the health department to take the necessary precautions. He said the school has remained open because the disease is spread mainly through bodily fluids, not through casual contact.

Letters were sent home to parents on Monday to explain the situation.

The ill student is expected to be released from the hospital on Friday or Saturday.
