Learning From Action In Somerset High Rise Fire
"I found some people on the 6th floor. They were afraid to leave and were in wheelchairs. They felt they couldn't go down the steps. They weren't able to be carried down because of their size," said firefighter John Wiser.
Somerset volunteer firefighters along with three other fire departments battled the blaze at the Somerset Towers on Friday. While some firefighters worked to contain the fire in a unit on the 4th floor, others helped the close to 100 residents make it out of the 10-story high rise safely. But, it wasn't easy. The people in wheelchairs who didn't want to be carried down the steps waited until Fire Chief Pete Barnhart gave the okay for them to use the elevators.
"We didn't release the elevators for use until we knew where the fire was and got it contained," said Barnhart.
This was the first time the Somerset volunteer firefighters worked to put out flames in a high rise. They say many lessons were learned and some training will be added.
Barnhart explained, "Now, our emphasis will be dealing with training with high rise buildings."
One woman was injured in the fire. Janet Craig is listed in fair condition.
