Mail Woes Plague Mundy's Corner Residents, Postal Workers

Wednesday, September 20, 2006 – updated: 2:03 pm EDT September 20, 2006

Neither rain nor sleet nor snow may keep the mail from getting through, but in one local community, a damaged building is making it harder for residents to pick it up.

The Johnstown post office is refusing to deliver mail to the residents of Leisure Village in Mundy's Corner because workers said their mail house is simply unfit for postal workers.

The mail house was damaged in July when a car drove into in, breaking through one of the walls.

Since then, the post office has refused to deliver residents' mail, telling them they need to instead drive into Johnstown to pick it up at the post office.

Many residents said they work long hours and don't have time to drive into the city until the weekend. Further, other residents are handicapped or don't have vehicles.

Some residents said they recently received a letter from Robert McKool, the owner of Leisure Village, saying he is still waiting on an estimate to fix the mail house.

Calls to McKool were not returned.
