ALTOONA, Pa. -- Agents and police officers from several departments conducted a low- and mid-level drug sweep in Blair County Monday morning, resulting in 12 people facing drug dealing-related charges.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane said the sweep conducted throughout the county was the result of an ongoing investigation between her office and the county district attorney's office.

Kane said the investigation was related to the distribution of heroin, cocaine and prescription medications.

Kane said the investigation centered on agents making undercover and controlled purchases of drugs in and around Altoona.

She said agents will continue to investigate heroin trafficking in and around the city and that more arrests were expected in connection to the sweep.

Kane said there is a direct link between prescription drug use and heroin use in Pennsylvania and heroin-related overdoses continue to rise statewide.

Kane said the investigation and roundup was a team effort of her department's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation, Blair County District Attorney Richard Consiglio's office, Blair County Sherriff's Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Altoona Police Department.

Additionally, Kane thanked businesses and community leaders involved with Operation Our Town, the group formed to work with law enforcement officials to combat drugs and drug-related crimes.
