JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- It's been one year since Jamil Gray was shot, killed and found lying in a Johnstown alley. At the time police didn't know who was responsible. In fact, it wasn't until last month Johnstown police made an arrest in the case. And now a second man has been charged.

Dante Herring is a person 6 News reported about last month -- a man 6 News expected to be charged after court documents revealed witnesses allegedly told police they saw him leave the scene of the shooting.

It was this time last month Johnstown police arrested Derrick Stephens and charged him with Gray's death. Police said it happened near the corner of Union and Lincoln streets in the city last June.

But in the charges against Stephens, Herring was also listed. He was said to be a childhood friend of Gray's and a man their acquaintances told police had developed ill feelings for Gray following a drug bust at the Holiday Inn in 2011.

"We know that some of the stuff he's done... are of a very serious nature and on a more serious scale than just a simple street level dealer," said Johnstown police Capt. Andrew Frear.

Herring is a man well known to police; on Wednesday he also charged with criminal homicide in connection to Gray's death. Police now say he's the one who pulled the trigger.

"Dante Herring is the one we believe committed the homicide on Jamil Gray," Frear said.

Stephens is still in jail. He too is facing charges in connection to Gray's death. Police say he and Herring played different roles.

"He is believed to be the one who brought him out to the actor," Frear said.

In court documents police said they learned Stephens was storing Herring's truck earlier this year. They said when they went to pick it up Stephens was nervous; when they told him to relax, he allegedly told them, "That's easy for you to say, he's a stone cold killer."

Police told 6 News Herring could soon be facing charges for his alleged involvement with other crimes in the city, including a shooting that happened along Kennedy Avenue in 2012. That investigation is still ongoing.

Herring is currently at SCI Houtzdale serving time for drug and parole violations. He is expected to be brought back to Cambria County by the end of the month.
