BRADFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An elementary school student in Clearfield County decided 15 miles was too far for himself and people in his community to have to go to get to the nearest library. Instead, he created a small library of his own, so anyone can check out a book closer to home.

Curtis Thompson is a fourth grade student at Bradford Township Elementary School in Woodland. With his town missing a library, he thought something had to be done.

Thompson's teacher, Courtney Terry, said he came up with the idea and took it upon himself to get the plans going to create the Free Little Library.

"He said, 'You know what, let's make [a library] for our community,'" Terry said. "He took the initiative and took the idea home to his parents and seven months later, we have a great resource in our community."

The structure of the library was built by Thompson and his parents and earned Thompson an award at the special ribbon cutting ceremony.

"We created a merit of achievement for him for taking the initiative," Bradford Township Elementary Principal Mary Myke Sayers said. "It was a long seven-month process. He decided to do it on his own and again I think it speaks volumes to the type of student that Curtis is and I think seeing that recognition will help inspire other kids."

Thompson's classmates have also helped to fill the library with dozens of books.

"You can get books, you can donate different books, there's adult and kid books," Thompson said. "There's more kids playing video games than reading and more kids need to read than play video games."

The library is outside the Bigler YMCA on Walker Road and is open round-the-clock, every day of the year.
