CLEARFIELD, Pa.-- A panel of three experts spoke to a crowded room inside Grice's Gun Shop in Clearfield, Saturday morning. Clearfield County Sheriff Wes Thurston, National Rifle Association instructor Bill Marsh and attorney John Sobel made up a panel as they discussed the rules and regulations of having a concealed carry permit. Grice's Gun Shop has been in business since 1961 and for owner Tom Grice, this seminar is a great idea.

“There has been a huge increase in the number of the concealed carry permits in the last 18 months, two years, so there are a lot of people that have them that may not know exactly what the laws are and are here to learn and make sure they are abiding,” Tom Grice said.

Republican state Rep. Tommy Sankey of the 74th District organized the event. 6News asked him why he thinks applications are on the rise.

“A lot of reasons I think. It is in the news media now and a lot of people have uncertainties about federal government regulations a lot of people, with the shootings you see in malls and movie theaters, people are getting more concerned about their personal protection and they want to protect their family and they want to do it legally,” Sankey said.

He said many of those in attendance Saturday are new permit holders looking to learn more, longtime permit holders looking for a refresher and others interested in just learning more.

“There is so much confusion about what we are allowed to do what we are not allowed to do so, I figure we could come down here and get some information, and when you are carrying a gun you want to make sure you are doing it properly, and most gun carriers are legal abiding citizens and they want to do it right,” Rod Straw, of Curwensville said.
