BURNSIDE TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Police said rescue crews from numerous counties tried to save a man after he had been kayaking with a relative and his vessel overturned, but the man ultimately died.

Edward A Heberling, 48, had been kayaking with family in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River near Route 219 and Kantz Hill Road, said police.

Police said Heberling was thrown into swift moving, freezing water and could not be located due to ice covering the river.

After 45 minutes of searching, Heberling was found 100 yards downstream of his entry point, said police.

Police said emergency personnel immediately began to perform CPR, Heberling was life flighted to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, where he was pronounced dead.

Dispatched to the scene were six fire departments, including Westover, Cherry Tree, Burnside, Sandy Township, Grampian and Curwensville.

Two ambulance agencies were at the scene, including Citizens and Mahaffey.

One fire rescue team from Treasure Lake and one ice rescue team from Jackson Township also assisted.
