WESTMONT, Pa. -- A World War II veteran was the recipient of a special gift this holiday season from those close to him, thanking him for his service in battle.
Andrew Mikolaj, 93, fought in the European theater of World War II. He enlisted in 1942 and was one of the infantrymen who landed in France during the invasion of Normandy.
Surrounded by his relatives Sunday night, Mikolaj opened one of his gifts, a Quilt of Valor. The quilt is part of a Quilt of Valor Foundation, started in 2003 by a woman from Delaware, as a project to make quilts to honor the sacrifices of those who have served the country in the armed forces.
“I really appreciate this honor and I accept this blanket as a vet of World War II,” Mikolaj said. “[I’m] glad that I served my country.”
As of May 2012, the Quilts of Valor project has made and delivered more than 65,000 quilts to active and retired service members.
