Centre County, Pa. – A state prison inmate at Rockview was arraigned on charges he raped and nearly killed a female prison employee in Centre County court on Thursday.
Police charge Omar Best with two counts of rape and aggravated assault for the attack that happened inside the state prison on July 25.
Through court documents and several sources, 6 News learned the employee was working in a housing office when Best came in to take out the trash. That’s when those sources said he suddenly attacked her and strangled her until she passed out.
Sources said surveillance cameras show Best in the office for just under 28 minutes.
Just weeks after the attack, Governor Corbett said he was ordering an investigation into the incident. That announcement coincided with a recent statewide review that concluded more needed to be done in terms of training corrections personnel.
Bail was set for Best at $250,000, but he’s already in prison in Huntingdon state prison on previous sexual assault convictions.
