Police rescue hearing impaired man from burning home

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. --
A local police officer rescued a man from an early morning house fire in Cambria County on Monday.
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. in a home on the 500 block of Swank Street in Upper Yoder Township.
Police and neighbors said the man who lives there alone, Joe Varmecky, is hearing impaired.
Upper Yoder police Sgt. Jeff Berkebile had to kick in a rear door of the home to reach him and, once inside, he found Varmecky in the living room.
Upper Yoder and Southmont fire departments responded.
Sgt. Berkebile wrote Varmecky a note saying he was not allowed back in.
The community calling Berkebile a hero and recognizing all the first responders in the area.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
